FedEx Dataworks and Stripe have agreed a long-term strategic collaboration focused on financing and payments for small and medium-sized businesses.

The first joint product is due to launch in early 2027. It will combine shipping data from the FedEx network with Stripe's financial systems.

At the core of the arrangement is a plan to widen access to finance for smaller businesses that depend heavily on logistics. Traditional lending models often rely on bank statements and credit scores, which can miss day-to-day operating signals such as shipment activity, inventory movement and fulfilment performance.

Under the proposed model, FedEx Dataworks will use operational information from the FedEx network to support financing analysis through Stripe Capital. This could help Stripe assess applicants and provide funding using a broader picture of how a business operates.

The arrangement also includes a payments component for FedEx. Stripe will become an option for processing payments for the company, adding more than 50 payment methods to its checkout systems.

The change is intended to give FedEx customers a wider choice of local payment methods in different markets. For a company with a large international customer base, the ability to accept familiar forms of payment can affect conversion and checkout completion.

Finance focus

The financing element reflects a broader effort by infrastructure and payments groups to use operational data to support lending decisions. Smaller companies in transport, eCommerce and fulfilment often generate strong order and shipping activity but may not meet standard lending criteria, particularly when banks place more weight on historic financial statements than on current trading patterns.

FedEx Dataworks is the data and analytics arm of FedEx, which has been expanding beyond parcel delivery into software, intelligence and related services built on activity across its network. Stripe, meanwhile, has been broadening its role from online payments into business finance and other merchant tools.

For Stripe, the collaboration offers a way to tie financial services more closely to physical commerce. For FedEx, it creates a route into financial products that sit alongside the shipping and checkout services used by its business customers.

Vishal Talwar, Executive Vice President, Chief Digital and Information Officer of FedEx, and President of FedEx Dataworks, said the company sees commercial value in the data created by the movement of goods across its network.

"Every day, FedEx helps move more than $2 trillion in global commerce, giving us unique visibility into how businesses operate," said Vishal Talwar, Executive Vice President, Chief Digital and Information Officer of FedEx, and President of FedEx Dataworks.

"Our focus at Dataworks is to leverage that intelligence by building solutions that create value for customers and help make supply chains smarter. This collaboration is an important step in laying the foundation for future innovations across the global economy."

Payments expansion

The payments side of the agreement is also significant for FedEx's customer systems. Adding more than 50 payment methods suggests a push to localise checkout options for customers in different countries, where card use, bank transfers and wallet preferences vary sharply.

Stripe has been building this kind of payments infrastructure for merchants of all sizes. FedEx's adoption of it shows how logistics groups are increasingly treating payments as part of the customer experience rather than a back-office function.

The companies described the collaboration as a long-term project rather than a single product launch. The initial work on financing for small and medium-sized businesses is intended as the starting point for broader business services built on FedEx logistics signals and Stripe's financial systems.

John Collison, Co-Founder and President of Stripe, linked the initiative to the overlap between trade flows and digital payments.

"FedEx and Stripe power the physical and digital foundations of global trade," said John Collison, Co-Founder and President of Stripe.

"Together, we can turn the operational momentum of a small business, like shipping a thousand packages a week, into access to growth finance through Stripe Capital."

Stripe processes more than $1.9 trillion in payments annually, equivalent to 1.6% of global GDP. FedEx reported annual revenue of USD $86 billion and said it employs more than 450,000 people.
