Kiwi Muslim Directory launches app to expand community reach

Today

The Kiwi Muslim Directory is set to launch 'Locate,' its first-ever mobile app, transforming the way New Zealand's Muslim community accesses essential services.

The app, represents a significant step forward for the 16-year-old directory, which has served as a cornerstone for locating Halal eateries, butchers, Islamic centres, and community events.

The directory's founder, Naveed Ahmed, originally developed the resource to address the challenges he faced as a new immigrant in 1998. "Locate" marks the directory's evolution from a paper-based guide to a modern digital platform.

"We're immensely proud of the community we've built with the help of a dedicated, volunteer-based team," said Nawaz Ahmed, Naveed's son.

"Developing this app has been a labour of love and reflects the trust and support we've received from the Muslim community over the years."

Bridging tradition and technology
The "Locate" app aims to enhance accessibility for New Zealand's Muslim community while fostering inclusivity and integration.

By transitioning to a user-friendly digital format, the app offers a streamlined way to access Halal-certified businesses, prayer facilities, and other Muslim-friendly services.

"Through the app, Muslims arriving in New Zealand can instantly access a reliable directory of service providers they can trust," Nawaz explained. This digital transformation aligns with the directory's longstanding partnerships, including collaborations with Tourism New Zealand and FIANZ to produce the NZ Halal Food Guide.

Expanding opportunities in cultural tourism
Beyond convenience, "Locate" is expected to bolster New Zealand's appeal as a destination for international Muslim travellers, a growing demographic in global tourism. The app plans to include information on Muslim-friendly tourist attractions and experiences, catering to families and individuals alike.

"Technology enables us to bring culturally significant attractions to the forefront, ensuring that travellers feel at home and supported," said Nawaz.

The app's focus on cultural tourism not only supports New Zealand's tourism industry but also promotes greater awareness and inclusivity among local businesses.

A sustainable future for the directory
Transitioning to an app also addresses the financial challenges associated with traditional printed directories. Advertising revenue previously supported substantial printing costs, but the digital platform offers a scalable solution to reach a broader audience without the constraints of physical distribution.

"Our reach has previously been limited to a basic website and physical directories distributed at places of worship," Nawaz noted.

"The app allows us to transcend those boundaries, creating a seamless experience for users and opening up new opportunities for community engagement."

Technology's role in fostering inclusivity
Digital platforms like "Locate" have broader implications for bridging communities and fostering cultural understanding.

By highlighting Muslim-friendly services and destinations, the app helps promote inclusivity and a sense of belonging for the community.

As New Zealand continues its commitment to being a welcoming destination, initiatives like the Kiwi Muslim Directory's app showcase how technology can drive progress in embracing diversity.
