Synology launches new hybrid & cloud-based services

Thu 15 Jul 2021
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Data management firm Synology has made a major push for hybrid and cloud-based storage across its C2 platform.

The company has rolled out four new cloud services across the platform, with the aim of delivering hybrid and cloud-only products such as cloud backup, secure file transfers, directory as a service, and password management.

The company also aims to launch a new data center location to better serve the Asia Pacific region. The data center, to be located in Taiwan, will bring the C2 platform closer to Asia Pacific customers. The company states that customers can expect to see reduced latency and an improved end user experience, much like how on-premise NAS and SAN solutions provide similar benefits for edge deployments.

Synology CEO and founder Philip Wong says, “Large amounts of unstructured data is constantly being generated at exponential rates. Traditional centralised storage deployments can no longer keep up with ever-increasing bandwidth and performance demands.”

“Edge cloud products are one of the fastest-growing solutions in the market today because they uniquely address the challenges that modern businesses.”

Synology is also rolling out DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.0, the operating system that powers Synology’s NAS products. DSM includes storage interoperability, backup and data protection capabilities, and robust synchronisation and collaboration solutions together to address increasingly distributed workplaces and sources of data. DSM 7.0 also introduces security improvements through two-factor authentication system Secure SignIn.

Launching together with DSM 7.0 are new hybrid cloud services, such as Active Insight, a large-scale device monitoring and diagnostics solution, Hybrid Share, which combines C2 storage flexibility and synchronisation capabilities with on-premises solutions, and C2 Identity, a hybrid cloud directory as a service to simplify cross-site domain management.

Add-ons for DSM include Synology Drive, Active Backup suite, and more. Other Synology standalone solutions include C2 Password, C2 Transfer, and C2 Backup.

Wong comments, “Four years of rolling out and operating our cloud service has allowed us to integrate our expertise in data management with new technologies, enabling innovative optimisations that allow us to deliver a reliable but extremely cost-competitive solution."

He says the company is now looking at a path of rapid expansion into additional locations to engage more potential customers.

“DSM 7.0 and the new C2 expansion bring forward Synology’s new outlook on data management. We will continue pushing the boundaries even further with closer integration, bringing out the best of both on-premises and cloud architectures together.”

The new C2 solutions are now being rolled out. DSM 7.0 will be available soon.
