Take2 helps parolees & ex-offenders enter tech industry

Take2, a New Zealand-based not-for-profit, is addressing the tech industry's persistent worker shortage while simultaneously providing parolees and ex-offenders with new career opportunities through its web coding and software development programme. Established in 2019, Take2 has successfully enhanced the employability of ex-offenders, boasting impressive outcomes.

The programme has seen 88% of its graduates secure employment within six months and 83% receive promotions within a year. Initially launched at the Auckland South Corrections Facility, Take2 has expanded its footprint to Newmarket and more recently extended into Australia.

Take2's CEO Cameron (Cam) Smith is at the helm of this transformative initiative. Observing the barriers criminal convictions present to job prospects, coupled with New Zealand's demand for tech talent, Smith founded Take2. He left his recruitment position and self-funded the first year of the initiative, collaborating with impact-driven organisations and tech companies. His contributions have earned him recognition, including being named an Edmund Hillary Fellow in 2020, a finalist for New Zealander of the Year in 2022, and an Asia Pacific Leader for the Obama Foundation.

Smith commented on the programme's mission and broader societal objectives. "We saw a gap not just in the tech industry's growing needs but also in providing tangible second chances for those who have paid their debts to society," he stated. "Our programme is designed not only to teach coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript but also to impart practical skills, teamwork, and real-world applications."

The success of Take2's graduates in landing jobs with top firms like Datacom, RUSH, Woolworths, and Xero underscores the programme's efficacy. Smith highlighted the dual impact of the initiative, noting, "What we are achieving is two-fold: addressing a crucial social issue while meeting a significant industry need."

Take2’s curriculum is structured around essential coding languages and includes extensive training in practical skills. It emphasises the importance of teamwork and applying knowledge to real-world scenarios. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are not only job-ready but also equipped with skills that facilitate career growth and longevity in the tech sector.

The not-for-profit organisation has received substantial support from various sectors, reflecting the collaborative effort required to sustain its operations and expand its reach. Partnerships with impact-driven organisations and tech firms have been integral to its progress.

While the programme continues to produce remarkable results, Smith is eager to expand its impact further. "Our ultimate goal is to scale this model and reach more individuals who could benefit from it, thus bridging the gap in the tech industry while offering genuine rehabilitation and career pathways," he explained.

As Take2 forges ahead with its mission, it stands as an example of how targeted education and training can serve as powerful tools for social reintegration and economic productivity. The initiative not only transforms lives but also contributes to a more inclusive workforce, addressing both societal and industry-specific challenges.
