TNS has appointed Michael Johnson Global Managing Director of its Payments Market business, putting a long-serving regional executive in charge of the company's worldwide payments unit.

Johnson will lead the global Payments Market business, overseeing strategy across products and markets while working with regional management teams and the corporate leadership group.

The appointment marks the latest step in an internal career path that began when Johnson joined TNS in 2017 as Vice President of APAC Operations. In that role, he oversaw network operations across Asia Pacific before moving up in 2018 to become Managing Director for Asia Pacific Payments.

He later took on responsibility for the ADVAM suite of solutions after TNS acquired the business, broadening his operational remit within the company's payments activities.

Career path

Before joining TNS, Johnson spent 15 years at First Data Australia and New Zealand, where he rose to Vice President of Global Service Delivery. He also served as Chief Executive Officer of PAX Technology Australia.

Originally from New Zealand, he began his career as a Project Manager at Centrica Telecommunications in London before relocating to Sydney in 2002.

The appointment comes as payments providers face continued demand from merchants, financial institutions and self-service operators for systems that support transaction processing and connectivity across multiple markets. TNS describes its payments business as a strategic focus as that demand grows.

TNS operates in payment and network services and serves more than 2,800 organisations in over 50 countries. Its customer base includes merchants, financial institutions and self-service operators seeking a single provider for payment acceptance, connectivity and transaction processing.

Management focus

Johnson described the promotion as a significant step for both the company and the wider sector.

"I'm honored to take on this global role at such an important time for both TNS and the payments industry. As payment ecosystems continue to evolve, our customers need a trusted partner that can simplify complexity while delivering secure, resilient and scalable infrastructure that their mission-critical commerce depends on. Building on TNS's strong heritage in payments, I'm looking forward to working with our global teams to help customers innovate with confidence and support their growth wherever they operate," said Michael Johnson, Global Managing Director, TNS Payments Market.

His promotion also gives TNS a global payments chief with direct experience of its Asia Pacific operations, a region where payment methods, acceptance technology and self-service transactions have expanded quickly in recent years.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Keegan said Johnson's familiarity with the company's products, customers and internal teams shaped the decision.

"Michael's knowledge of TNS's payments and connectivity products, services and customers, as well as his strong relationships with TNS employees across all groups and regions, will ensure that we remain focused on delivering on the significant opportunities we have in our Payments Market business. As the team collaborates in pursuit of those opportunities, I look forward to what will be achieved under Michael's leadership," said Mike Keegan, Chief Executive Officer, TNS.

TNS was founded in the United States in 1990 and has built its business around managed network and payment services. In payments, the company works across in-store, unattended and online environments, alongside broader network connectivity services for transaction routing and processing.

The choice of an internal candidate suggests continuity in how TNS plans to run the division, drawing on leadership already embedded in its regional operations and acquired product lines. Johnson now takes responsibility for aligning those strands at a global level as the company seeks to expand its presence in payments infrastructure.
