Vectra AI launches global scholarship for cybersecurity skills

Today

Vectra AI has announced the launch of the Vectra AI Scholars Programme, designed to address the skills shortage in the cybersecurity sector by encouraging students worldwide to leverage artificial intelligence in combating cyber threats.

The programme, aimed at high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, seeks to foster innovative approaches in identifying and mitigating cyber threats through AI and machine learning.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit proposals or essays exploring the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. The initiative is open to students from various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and several European and Asian nations.

Hitesh Sheth, CEO and Founder of Vectra AI, commented on the programme's objectives: "We believe the next generation of innovators will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of cybersecurity. This scholarship programme is designed to inspire students from around the world to explore how AI can uncover patterns in attacker behavior and solve some of the most complex challenges in digital security. By investing in their creativity and ingenuity, we hope to empower young minds to push the boundaries of what's possible in the fight against threats."

The Australian and New Zealand cybersecurity landscapes are particularly poised for growth, with the industry facing an increasing demand for skilled professionals.

Chris Fisher, Regional Director for Vectra AI Australia and New Zealand, stated, "In Australia, this initiative is particularly significant as it aligns with the national push towards enhancing AI literacy and innovation. By empowering students with the resources and mentorship they need, we are not only fostering the next generation of cybersecurity experts but also strengthening our industry's ability to combat emerging threats. With an estimated 17,000 new cybersecurity jobs expected to be created in Australia by 2026, this programme will help bridge the skills gap, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of technological advancements and cybersecurity resilience."

The programme offers financial incentives to encourage participation, with the top scholarship winner receiving a cash prize of USD $10,000.

Two runners-up will each receive USD $5,000. Apart from the monetary awards, winners will also benefit from mentorship opportunities with Vectra AI experts. Mentors will guide participants in career planning, networking, and applying their research and ideas to real-world scenarios.

This initiative comes at a time when the cybersecurity market is growing rapidly, driven by the need to protect digital infrastructures against increasingly sophisticated threats.

According to projections, IT spending in Australia is set to grow significantly, underlining the urgency of developing a capable cybersecurity workforce.

The selection process for the Vectra AI Scholars Programme will evaluate submissions based on criteria such as the potential impact on the industry, the originality of the concept, and its practical viability. The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2025.
