MSCI names Dinesh Gupta chief data & operations head

Wed, 4th Mar 2026

MSCI has appointed Dinesh Gupta as Chief Data Officer and Global Head of Operations, adding a senior executive with an artificial intelligence and digitisation background from Goldman Sachs.

Based in New York, Gupta reports to Chairman and CEO Henry Fernandez. He will lead MSCI's global data organisation, including enterprise-wide data governance and the data engineering and operations functions.

The appointment places data management and operational delivery under a single executive as financial market data grows in volume and complexity. Index providers and analytics firms such as MSCI rely on large datasets to support index construction, risk and performance analytics, and research products used by investors and financial institutions.

Expanded remit

Gupta will oversee governance processes for data quality, controls and reliability. He will also lead the company's data strategy, which MSCI said is aligned with business objectives and regulatory standards.

The role combines data engineering leadership with responsibility for broader operations. MSCI did not detail how its operations function is structured or whether the remit includes technology operations as well as business operations.

Fernandez described the move as an investment in the firm's data and AI agenda. "Data is at the core of MSCI's role in the global financial ecosystem and central to how we deliver value and innovation to our clients," Fernandez said.

"Dinesh brings deep expertise in data engineering and AI at a pivotal time for our industry. His leadership will further enhance our data and AI capabilities and accelerate the development of research-driven solutions for clients around the world," he added.

Goldman background

Gupta joins MSCI after more than three decades in financial services. At Goldman Sachs, he was a Partner and led an organisation responsible for building AI platforms and machine-learning work across multiple use cases, according to MSCI. He also led firmwide digitisation initiatives.

His work spanned several Goldman divisions, including Investment Management, Consumer, Asset Management and Private Wealth Management. MSCI did not disclose how long he held those responsibilities or whether Goldman will replace him internally.

The move reflects a broader market pattern as data, technology and operations leadership roles increasingly converge. Index and analytics firms have expanded their technology stacks over the past decade as clients demand faster delivery, more frequent updates and tighter integration with their own systems. Providers also face growing scrutiny over governance, model risk, and controls applied to data and methodologies used in investment products.

Gupta framed the role as a response to changes in market structure and technology. "I am honored to join MSCI at a transformative moment for the industry," he said.

"The increasing scale and complexity of financial markets require robust data infrastructure and the integration of advanced technologies. I look forward to building on MSCI's strong foundation to enhance scalability, strengthen execution and support long-term growth," Gupta added.

Business context

MSCI supplies indexes, analytics and data used by asset managers, asset owners, banks, insurers and other market participants. Its benchmarks underpin investment products in public markets, and it has expanded its datasets into areas such as ESG, climate and private markets in recent years.

Data governance has become a central issue in these segments. Providers must manage large numbers of source inputs, document methodologies, maintain audit trails, and respond to client questions about data lineage and assumptions. Regulation has also pushed firms to strengthen oversight and controls over data and models that influence investment decisions.

MSCI has not disclosed which projects Gupta will prioritise or whether it plans further organisational changes across data, operations or technology. MSCI said he will lead the firm's global data organisation and global data engineering and operations functions as part of a broader data strategy.
